What this does

Video Converter changes a video's container and codec — between MP4 (universal), WebM (smaller, modern web), MOV (Apple), and MKV (best for archival). All conversion happens in your browser via FFmpeg WASM.

When to use it

  • Converting a phone-recorded MOV to MP4 for cross-platform sharing
  • Reducing a video's size by switching to WebM for a website
  • Re-wrapping an MKV to MP4 to play in Premiere / Final Cut
  • Converting old AVI files to a modern format

Frequently asked

Which format should I pick?

MP4 for universal compatibility (works everywhere). WebM for websites (smaller files, modern browsers only). MOV for Apple ecosystems. MKV for archival (best quality, supports more codecs but limited player compatibility).

Does converting reduce quality?

Slightly — re-encoding is lossy by nature. We use FFmpeg's ultrafast preset to keep conversion times reasonable. For the smallest quality loss with the biggest size savings, use Compress instead.

Why doesn't every input format work?

FFmpeg WASM ships with a subset of codecs (H.264, VP8/9, AAC, MP3, Vorbis). Older or exotic formats like H.265, AV1, or ProRes may not decode in the browser.
